How do I use a mood board to plan my kitchen renovation?

A mood board is a visual representation of your design ideas and inspiration for a particular project. It can be a helpful tool for organizing and refining your design concepts, and it’s particularly useful for kitchen renovations. Each one of us can appreciate many styles and finishes, the trick is to refine these into a cohesive style that will work in your home. Here’s how to use a mood board for kitchen inspiration:

Gather inspiration

Start by collecting images of kitchens, samples of paint or laminate colours you like, benchtop samples, flooring samples, fabrics that might be used in the surrounding areas, and other materials that inspire you. These might include pictures of kitchen designs you like, samples of materials you want to use, and even items like kitchen gadgets, or found objects that provide a colour palette.

Tip: if you are not changing your flooring, ensure that any finish you select works well with your floor. If you have a clash with your floor – then it is back to the drawing mood board.

Choose a format

There are many ways to create a mood board, including using a physical board, an online tool, or an app. Some clients come to us with a print out of various images that they have refined down to those they love most. Choose the format that works best for you – the most important thing is that you gather ideas.

Organize your materials

Once you have all of your inspiration materials, it’s time to start organizing them. Group similar items together and create a cohesive look and feel.

Select your materials

From those groups, start placing colours and finishes next to each other to work out the combination that suits you best.  Items might include paint/laminate colors, benchtop materials, flooring and appliance finishes.

Create the mood board

Arrange your selected materials in your chosen format. You can use glue, pins, or other methods to attach the materials to the board.

Refine and adjust

As you create your mood board, you may realize that certain elements don’t work together or that you want to make changes. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments and refine your design as you go.

Use the mood board as a reference

Once your mood board is complete, use it as a reference as you start to make decisions about your kitchen renovation. It can help you stay on track and ensure that your design stays cohesive and within your vision.

Using a mood board for kitchen inspiration can be a fun and effective way to organize and refine your design ideas. It’s a great tool to help create a cohesive and functional kitchen that meets your needs and reflects your style.
